First Environment has supported the Township of Sparta for the past 15 years in providing environmental technical support for various ongoing environmental underground storage tank (UST) sites, including the former USTs located at the municipal/town hall complex, First Aid Squad, and Department of Public Works garage. First Environment completed detailed site and remedial investigations to fully characterize the nature and extent of petroleum contamination resulting from discharges of gasoline from former USTs. As part of these investigations, numerous soil and groundwater samples were collected from soil borings and monitoring wells to evaluate the source area and develop technically appropriate remedial alternatives for each site. First Environment also completed compliance monitoring of groundwater and reporting as required by the Technical Requirements for Site Remediation (TRSR). Where appropriate, we developed Classification Exception Areas (CEAs) and proposed monitored natural attenuation (MNA) as the selected remedy. To support this approach, First Environment modeled the degradation rates of the contaminants of concern and established a timeframe for MNA to occur. To evaluate the natural attenuation process, First Environment conducted quarterly sampling of select wells to evaluate the efficacy of the remedy and ensure protectiveness of human health and the environment. In addition, our staff has provided environmental technical support regarding the closure of Sparta’s municipal landfill, including post closure monitoring.
